About the Greensand Trust
The Greensand Trust is an independent environmental charity that works with local communities and landowners to conserve and promote the distinctive landscape, wildlife and history of the Greensand Ridge and the wider surrounding area. Although centred on the Greensand Ridge, the Trust provides a range of services across Bedfordshire and areas of Buckinghamshire and Milton Keynes.
About Sands of Time
The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) awarded the Greensand Trust a grant totaling just over £47,000 for the sand history archive project to collate information and celebrate the history of the Leighton Buzzard Sand industry. Through this project the stories of the sand and related industries in Leighton Buzzard and Heath and Reach, Bedfordshire, have been collected, recorded and preserved in a permanent and accessible archive.
The Heritage Lottery Fund enables communities to celebrate, look after and learn more about our diverse heritage. For more information about Heritage Lottery Fund, please go to http://www.hlf.org.uk
The project was developed in two phases, initially collecting information, written research and recorded memories, reminiscences, artefacts and photos of local people who work or used to work in the Leighton Buzzard sand Industry and related sand, tile and brick works.
Archives are an ideal way to keep history alive for future generations and the second phase of the project means that this sand history archive is now available online for people involved to share their stories and recollections of the past with the widest possible audience.
We hope that you will enjoy visiting this website and it will become a valuable legacy for future generations to learn of the heritage of our local communities.
